General Information
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a structured training program that combines paid on-the-job learning with related technical instruction. It is designed to develop a highly skilled workforce in various trades and industries.
How is apprenticeship different from other types of work-based training models?
Unlike internships or short-term training, apprenticeships involve paid employment where apprentices gain hands-on experience under the guidance of experienced journeyworkers while also completing formal coursework.
Are there apprenticeship programs in high-growth industries?
Yes, apprenticeships exist in traditional trades as well as high-growth industries such as healthcare, information technology, advanced manufacturing, and energy.
What are the different types of apprenticeship programs?
Apprenticeships include Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs), Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education Apprenticeships (CTAs), and pre-apprenticeships, each catering to different levels of training and experience.
Benefits
What are the benefits of apprenticeships for employers?
Employers gain a skilled and loyal workforce, improved productivity, reduced turnover, and a strong pipeline of trained employees tailored to their specific needs.
How long does a traditional apprenticeship last?
Most apprenticeships are competency-based. It is hard to put a time frame on an apprenticeship since it is dependent on experience at the beginning. DOL RAPs tend to be longer options varying from 1- 4 years. Career Tech’s CTAs tend to be utilized in shorter time frames a year or less.
What is the return on investment for apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships reduce recruitment costs, enhance employee retention, and increase productivity, making them a cost-effective workforce development strategy.
How can small and medium-sized businesses benefit from apprenticeships?
Small and medium-sized businesses can develop a pipeline of skilled workers with minimal recruitment costs, benefiting from government incentives and workforce development grants.
What funding is available to support apprenticeship program creation or expansion?
Employers may access federal, state, or industry-specific funding to help cover training costs, including grants and tax incentives.

Who determines the related instruction curriculum?
Meridian works with employers to ensure the highest quality and relevant curriculum is delivered.
Where can related instruction be provided?
Majority of related is provided at the Stillwater Meridian Campus. We do have the flexibility to provide related instruction at other locations such as Meridian South Campus in Guthrie or at an employer's facility.
Are apprenticeship programs flexible and adaptable?
Yes, our priority at Meridian is to serve the needs of employers. That’s why apprenticeships differ from traditional schooling—they don’t require strict attendance but instead offer flexible scheduling that fits the demands of a busy workforce.
How do I list an apprenticeship job opportunity?
Employers can be listed on our website as an approved employer by completing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This document outlines the responsibilities of Meridian as the Sponsor and the business as the Employer. Completing an MOU is an option even if an employer has not yet hired an apprentice. Many employers have identified being on our website as being a great recruitment tool.
What is an apprenticeship program sponsor?
A program sponsor is responsible for planning, administering, and funding apprenticeship programs. At Meridian, we take on this responsibility so businesses can focus on their operations while still benefiting from a structured apprenticeship program.
